In many parts of the world, millions of girls continue to face significant barriers to accessing education. According to UNESCO, approximately 130 million girls of primary and secondary school age were out of school globally before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted education systems further. This staggering number highlights systemic issues such as poverty, cultural norms that prioritize boys’ education, child marriage, and lack of access to safe transportation and sanitary facilities.
In some regions, girls are more likely to drop out of school due to household responsibilities, including caregiving and domestic chores, which disproportionately impact their educational opportunities. Without intervention, these girls are at risk of perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality, as education is a crucial determinant of future income potential and social mobility.
Moreover, even when girls do enroll in school, challenges persist. According to UNICEF, girls from the poorest households are four times more likely to be out of school than those from the wealthiest households. Additionally, conflict and humanitarian crises exacerbate these challenges, with girls often being the first to be pulled out of school and the least likely to return once conditions stabilize.
For instance, in refugee settings, girls face heightened risks of gender-based violence and exploitation, further deterring families from prioritizing their education. Addressing these disparities requires targeted efforts to eliminate financial, cultural, and logistical barriers that prevent girls from accessing and completing their education, ensuring that all girls have the opportunity to fulfill their potential.
At Lemonade with Ice, we are committed to creating lasting change through education. By working together, we can help more girls access the education they deserve, unlocking their potential and empowering them to shape a better future
